Age of oldest rocks off by millions of years

Two of the solar system's best natural timekeepers have been caught misbehaving, suggesting that the accepted ages for the oldest known rock samples are off by a million years or more.

According to two new studies, a radioactive version of the element samarium decays much more quickly than previously thought, and different versions of uranium don't always appear in the same relative quantities in earthly rocks.

Both elements are used by geologists to date rocks and chart the history of events on our planet and in the solar system.

"If you have a critical event in Earth's history, something like an extinction event or a climate change shift or a meteorite impact, you need to know the absolute age with the most confidence," says Joe Hiess of the British Geological Survey, who led one of the studies. "In Earth sciences there's a need to be able to define what happened first and what happened second."

Chronometer shortage

Geochemists age rocks by measuring the ratio of radioactive isotopes ? versions of the same element with different atomic masses ? in them. Because the elements decay from one isotope, or element, to another at a constant rate, knowing the ratio in a particular rock gives its age.

Different elements and isotopes decay at vastly different rates. Scientists pick one that suits the timescale of interest. One of the favourites for tracing events in the early solar system, such as when the Earth's crust differentiated from its mantle or when the lava oceans on the moon solidified, is samarium-146, a hard shiny metal found in many minerals in the Earth's crust.

"In this time window, there are not many other chronometers," says Michael Paul of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Scientists have measured samarium-146's half-life ? the time taken for exactly half of a sample of atoms to decay radioactively - four times over the past 60 years, and got different answers each time. The two most recent measurements seemed to converge on a half-life of 103 million years, plus or minus 5 million years. But Paul and colleagues suspected that that number wasn't quite right. So they used a technique called accelerator mass spectrometry, which Paul says is less likely to be skewed by experimental errors.

Youthful meteorites

They found that the half-life is just 68 million years, 30 per cent shorter than thought. That means that every rock dated by samarium-146 decay ? which include some of the oldest on Earth and the moon, and even some Martian meteorites ? formed 20 million to 80 million years earlier than thought.

In a solar system that's 4.5 billion years old, tens of millions of years "is a lot", Paul says. "It means everything was forming more quickly."

There was a second, separate hiccup. Earth's oldest rocks are also aged using isotopes of uranium, which decay into isotopes of lead. Until a few years ago, geochemists assumed that the ratio of uranium-238 to uranium-235 was constant ? 137.88 ? in all rocks, and therefore the ratio of lead isotopes was the only measurement needed to date the rocks. But high-precision measurements of early materials found in meteorites or rocks formed in oceans showed differences.

Hiess and colleagues made the most wide-ranging study of uranium isotope ratios yet, using 45 samples of zircon from all over the world (pictured, above right). Zircon was one of the first minerals to solidify on Earth, it resists weathering and melting, and it holds on to uranium well, so it's a good candidate for dating old rocks.

Mass extinction

The team found that, while most of their samples had similar uranium ratios, some were wildly different.

"It's no longer safe to assume that it doesn't vary. It clearly does," says Gregory Brennecka of Arizona State University, who was not involved in either study. "Nobody thought that was the case five years ago."

The team produced a new, average figure for the uranium ratios. It shifts the ages of Earth's oldest rocks slightly, by just under a million years, Hiess says. The oldest rocks will have the biggest corrections: sediments that are 4.4 billion years old are now younger by 700,000 years. "To put it into a human perspective, if the Earth was only 18 years old, we have taken 1 day off the life of its oldest materials," Hiess says.

Now that scientists know they need to measure the ratio of uranium isotopes in all of their samples - as well as the ratio of lead isotopes - they'll be able to date rocks more accurately.

That's important for putting events in order. If a mass extinction occurred just before a meteorite struck, say, that paints a different picture than if the meteorite hit first.

"These are two big steps in improving the way we do geochronology, both in the solar system and terrestrial rocks," Brennecka says.

One of the stories I haven't posted on, but was really interested in was the talk given by Bishop Geoffrey Robinson to the New Ways Ministry National Symposium recently held in Baltimore.? In his speech to the Conference Robinson broached the approach to sexual morality that I have advocated for decades.? It's the relational approach which places 'thee' before 'me'.? The NCR just posted an editorial endorsing this approach.? The following are two excerpts which I found most important in the editorial:


Rather than trying to discern good or bad in objective acts -- was this act unitive and open to procreation? -- look at how the intentions and circumstances surrounding what a person does or doesn?t do lead toward or away from loving deeply. ?Sexual acts are pleasing to God when they help to build persons and relationships, displeasing to God when they harm persons and relationships,? he writes.

Rather than narrowly focused attention on a few explicit Bible verses devoted to sexual morality, use the best of scripture scholarship to understand the Bible as the unfolding story of a journey, the spiritual journey of the people of God. No single verse or collection of verses can be seen as the final word of God on a subject, Robinson writes.

I have to tell a short story here.? I was teaching sexual morality in CCD a decade or so ago, right as the Boston Globe was exposing the clerical sexual abuse scandal,? and blew my class away by taking this approach.? The boys were snickering and carrying on and the girls giving coy looks and toying with their books when I stopped teaching the traditional approach and took up the relational approach.? I started by asking them if they had heard of the studies which described which teenagers were most apt to be engaging in sex.? They hadn't.? So I informed them that we have learned the boys with the highest levels of self esteem were the most sexually active, followed by girls with the lowest self esteem.? I said that drew a picture, not of sexuality as an equal expression, but of sexuality based on a power differential that was abusive and selfish.? The snickering stopped.? One young man raised his hand and made my intended point.? He said, "you are stating that most teen age sex is abusive in the same way about what's going on in Boston".? I replied that I was not making that comparison, the statistics drew that comparison and they were replicated over and over again.

This began a long discussion about how sexuality either affirmed a relationship or confirmed one's individual level of self esteem.? Not once did these teenagers ask about the procreative aspect of sexuality because that idea was the furthest thing from their minds.? For them sex was not about making babies, that was what their parents did, it was about other things entirely.? It was an eye opening experience for both the boys and the girls.? Unfortunately, the next week, when we were supposed to continue this discussion, was preempted by a cup cake and pop party because the rest of this topic would be covered by a group brought in from the outside who would teach the diocesan approved 'abstinence only' approach.? I got the message loud and clear.

Not coincidentally, the NCR is also running a series of articles on the hook up culture at Notre Dame.? First off let me state unequivocally that this is not a problem unique to Notre Dame.? I was just as blown away with this same phenomenon when my daughter was attending my own Catholic alma mater.? Back in my day we drank a lot of beer and because the drinking age was 19, a lot of that beer was drank at college approved and supervised parties.? Dating was still the 'hook up' of choice.? In my daughter's day the drinking age was back up to 21,? the drink of choice was Vodka and Ever Clear and spontaneous cell phone texting parties took place completely unknown to the student services staff.? Some of these parties were huge and many of them resulted in sexual hook ups.? The date rape culture was alive and well.? My daughter served on the campus disciplinary committee and the stories she told me were just mind boggling.? My boringly repetitive question was 'why aren't these incidents reported to the police?.? Her repetitive eyes rolling answer was the women won't press legal charges.? Which meant she and her committee were judge and jury for felony rape cases.? The attitude seemed to be, 'I got drunk, I got raped, I move on. He has another notch on his belt.'? Did I mention something about self esteem issues?

I think it's way past time our youth were given this relational approach to sexuality if only because it might empower our young women to say, and mean NO, and our young men to hear it.? When asked, they all say the same thing, the best sex I've ever had was when I was sober and when I was in love.? That attitude is not gender specific.? It's true for both men and women.? It's time we started teaching truth, and the truth about healthy sexuality is that it's expressed between two people who are each motivated to put the other first.

Nearly half of those executable files remained running despite V3's alleged cleanup. Its 76 percent malware detection rate is the second from lowest among current products, and its overall score of 5.0 points is third from lowest. At the top we see Comodo Internet Security Pro 2012 ($4.99/year direct, 4 stars) with 97 percent detection and Norton 360 Version 6.0 ($79.99 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) with 7.4 points; Norton missed some threats that Comodo detected, but better cleanup earned it a higher overall score.

V3 faired especially poorly against rootkits. More than half of current products detect 100 percent of my rootkit samples; V3 only saw 86 percent. It left some rootkits running, some of them with their rootkit technology intact, earning a below-average score of 4.7 points for rootkit removal. Norton topped this test with 8.9 points.

Apparently my particular scareware samples are relatively easy to detect, as all but four suites detected them. V3 is one of those four. With 6.3 points for scareware removal, it's at the bottom of the heap. Norton aced this test, scoring a perfect 10. The ingredients you will need are as follows:

- 1 cup soy milk

- 2 cups grated carrots

- Three (3) cups flour

- Two (2) cups water

- One cup sugar

- Half a teaspoon salt

- One and a half (1 1/2) teaspoons baking soda

- One and a half (1 1/2) cups raisins

- One and a half teaspoons cinnamon

- One and a half teaspoons allspice

- 1/2 teaspoon cloves

Preparation directions for this cake recipe:

1. Make sure that your oven is preheated to 350F (or will be once you?ve finished preparing everything ? about ten (10) minutes).

2. In a saucepan, mix together the water, raisins, carrots and spices. Bring to boiling point then simmer for eight minutes. Add the salt and sugar and continue to simmer for two (2) minutes longer. Now mix in the remainder of the ingredients.

3. Switch off the stove and continue to stir the blend continuously until it cools down.

4. In a large bowl, blend the flour with the bicarbonate of soda and the carrot and raisin blend. Fold these ingredients together.

5. Pour the batter into a lightly greased baking pan and place in the oven uncovered for approximately fifty (50) minutes. Keep a watch on it after half an hour as all ovens do vary a little. When it appears to be finished, poke the middle of the cake with a skewer and if no batter sticks to the skewer, remove the pan from the oven and permit it to cool for ten minutes.
