Rat and ant rescues 'don't show empathy'
ScienceDaily (Aug. 12, 2012) ? Studies of how rats and ants rescue other members of their species do not prove that animals other than humans have empathy, according to a team led by Oxford University scientists.
Empathy -- recognizing and sharing feelings experienced by another individual -- is a key human trait and to understand its evolution numerous studies have looked for evidence of it in non-human animals.
The ability to rescue another individual in distress, a typical empathic response of humans, appears in several other animals. Two recent laboratory studies led by US and French researchers looked at how rats and ants will attempt to free individuals of the same species they share a cage or nest with which have been restrained. However, writing in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, the Oxford-led team argues that such studies are not rigorous enough to separate examples of 'pro-social' behavior, the tendency to behave so as to benefit another individual, from genuine empathy.
'Empathy has been proposed as the motivation behind the sort of 'pro-social' rescue behavior in which one individual tries to free another,' said Professor Alex Kacelnik of Oxford University's Department of Zoology, lead author of the article, 'however, the reproductive benefits of this kind of behavior are relatively well understood as, in nature, they are helping individuals to which they are likely to be genetically related or whose survival is otherwise beneficial to the actor.
'To prove empathy any experiment must show an individual understands another's feelings and is driven by the psychological goal of improving another's wellbeing. Our view is that, so far, there is no proof of this outside of humans.'
The team highlights how interpretations of pro-social behavior vary -- rat rescues, for instance, are regarded as being motivated by empathy whilst ant rescues are not -- even though the observed behavior (pulling on the legs or tail of the trapped individual, followed by biting at the restraint) are very similar.
In order to prove empathy any experiment would need to show that individuals changed their response if the circumstances changed; for instance moving away from a trapped individual if that reduced the trapped animal's distress. It would also need to disentangle empathy from acting simply to stop the trapped animal's stress signals -- something that can be psychologically selfish and does not need to involve empathy.
Solving the riddle of empathy would have important implications not just for the sciences but for philosophy and ethics. However, the team concludes scientists will have to come up with new, more rigorous studies to show that empathy exists outside of humans.

UCC Termination Statements, a Trap for the Unwary: Part Six
Picking up where we left off last week, let?s examine a few more scenarios where a filed UCC termination is not authorized.
A security interest in collateral evidenced by a UCC financing statement may not only secure a loan being paid off, but it may also secure other loans or obligations owed by the debtor or a third party, so that a clear written commitment issued to the new lender by the existing lender being paid off to terminate all of the existing lender?s UCC financing statements against a particular debtor upon payment in full of the specified debt is essential and should be included in the payoff letter.
Another trap for the unwary lender is when there is more than one secured party of record listed on a UCC financing statement, as described above. Code Section 9-510(b) provides clearly that ?[a] record authorized by one secured party of record does not affect the financing statement with regard to another secured party of record.? Thus, there have been instances where less than all of the secured parties of record have terminated the UCC financing statements, resulting in an effective filing remaining of record with respect to those secured parties who did not terminate. See Official Comment 3 to Code Section 9-510.
And finally, consider a situation where a debtor has improperly terminated the UCC statement. There have been unscrupulous debtors who have improperly terminated UCC statements filed against them even though the secured debt remained unpaid.

The 2006 World Cup, hosted by Germany, changed attitudes in the country about the merits of waving the flag, something that had been considered shameful since the end of World War II. Amid the fervor of the World Cup, people started hanging flags outside their apartment windows or displaying them in their cars to show support for the German team. Lots of discussion followed about whether this was appropriate.
By the time the European Football Championship rolled around, hosted this year in Poland and Ukraine, it was no longer a big deal waving flags for the German team. Nonetheless, German athletes are still hesitant to refer to national pride and ?bringing home gold to Germany.?
More patriotism
Which is why Thomas Bach, president of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, called for more German patriotism in an interview ahead of London 2012, stating that athletes should not be ashamed of their successes. Polls back him up, showing that German society might be ready for a little more publicly displayed national pride. In a poll conducted in November 2011 by a monthly Protestant magazine, almost half of respondents, young adults between 14 and 29, said they identify as German, not European or as a global citizen.
A halfway approach may be called for. I wouldn't advocate that a German wear a black, red, and gold grill during the medal ceremony. But athletes shouldn't be ashamed of being a proud part of their nation?s Olympic team and saying so publicly. OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) ? As worshippers prayed and meditated at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin on Sunday morning, about a dozen women were preparing food in the temple kitchen for a post-service meal that is open to community members, regardless of religious affiliation.
Then the shooting started, sending terrified congregants scrambling for cover.
When the gunfire finally ended in a shootout between a gunman and police outside the temple in suburban Milwaukee, seven people lay dead, including the suspect, and three others were critically wounded in what police called an act of domestic terrorism.
Satpal Kaleka, wife of the temple's president, Satwant Singh Kaleka, was in the front room and saw the gunman enter the temple, according to Harpreet Singh, their nephew.
"He did not speak, he just began shooting," said Singh, relaying a description of the attack from Satpal Kaleka.
Kaleka said the 6-foot-tall bald white man ? who worshippers said they had never before seen at the temple ? seemed like he had a purpose and knew where he was going.
Federal authorities described the suspect as a white man in his 40s, but neither provided further details nor suggested a possible motive, including whether he specifically targeted the Sikh temple.
"We never thought this could happen to our community," said Devendar Nagra, 48, of Mount Pleasant, whose sister escaped injury by hiding as the gunman fired in the temple's kitchen. "We never did anything wrong to anyone."
Late Sunday, the investigation appeared to move beyond the temple as police, federal agents and the county sheriff's bomb squad swarmed a neighborhood in nearby Cudahy, evacuated several homes and searched a duplex. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent Tom Ahern said warrants were being served at the gunman's home. Residents were allowed to return to their homes Monday.
Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards said police expected to release more information Monday. He said the FBI will lead the investigation because the shootings are being treated as domestic terrorism, or an attack that originated inside the U.S.
"While the FBI is investigating whether this matter might be an act of domestic terrorism, no motive has been determined at this time," Teresa Carlson, Special Agent in Charge with the agency's Milwaukee division, said in a statement Sunday night.
During a chaotic few hours after the first shots were fired around 10:30 a.m., police in tactical gear and carrying assault rifles surrounded the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin with armored vehicles and ambulances. Witnesses struggled with unrealized fears that several shooters were holding women and children hostage inside.
Edwards said the gunman "ambushed" one of the first officers to arrive at the temple as the officer, a 20-year veteran with tactical experience, tended to a victim outside. A second officer then exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was fatally shot. Police had earlier said the officer who was shot killed the suspected shooter.
The wounded officer was in critical condition along with two other victims Sunday night, authorities said. Police said the officer was expected to survive.
Tactical units went through the temple and found four people dead inside and two outside, in addition to the shooter.
Jatinder Mangat, 38, of Racine, another nephew of the temple's president, said his uncle was among those shot, but he didn't know the extent of his injuries. When Mangat later learned people had died, he said "it was like the heart just sat down."
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office has received the bodies of the seven dead and autopsies will be conducted Monday morning, Medical Examiner spokeswoman Karen Domaglski.
Gurpreet Kaur, 24, of Oak Creek, said her mother was among a group of about 14 other women preparing a meal in the temple kitchen when the gunman entered and started firing. Kaur said her mother felt two bullets fly by her as the group fled to the pantry. Her mother suffered what Kaur thought was shrapnel wound in her foot.
"These are people I've grown up with," she said. "They're like aunts and uncles to me. To see our community to go through something like this is numbing."
Many Sikhs in the U.S. worship on Sundays at a temple, or gurdwara, and a typical service consists of meditation and singing in a prayer room where worshippers remove their shoes and sit on the floor. Worshippers gather afterward for a meal that is open to the entire community.
Kaur said she spent the afternoon serving as a translator between law enforcement and survivors at a nearby bowling alley. Police investigators kept witnesses inside the bowling alley's basement into the evening.
"We don't even know who's downstairs," Ravi P. Singh, 25, of Greenfield, said after going to the bowling alley to see if he could get more information about what had happened.
Sixteen-year-old LeRon Bridges, of Oak Creek, works at the bowling alley said police brought people from the temple over in two armored trucks. At one point, about 50 to 60 people were at the bowling alley, including police officers questioning witnesses and paramedics treating victims' wounds, he said.
"They were just hysterical," Bridges said. "There were kids. One big load came out of the truck."
Sikhism is a monotheistic faith founded more than 500 years ago in South Asia. It has roughly 27 million followers worldwide.
