Rat and ant rescues 'don't show empathy'
ScienceDaily (Aug. 12, 2012) ? Studies of how rats and ants rescue other members of their species do not prove that animals other than humans have empathy, according to a team led by Oxford University scientists.
Empathy -- recognizing and sharing feelings experienced by another individual -- is a key human trait and to understand its evolution numerous studies have looked for evidence of it in non-human animals.
The ability to rescue another individual in distress, a typical empathic response of humans, appears in several other animals. Two recent laboratory studies led by US and French researchers looked at how rats and ants will attempt to free individuals of the same species they share a cage or nest with which have been restrained. However, writing in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, the Oxford-led team argues that such studies are not rigorous enough to separate examples of 'pro-social' behavior, the tendency to behave so as to benefit another individual, from genuine empathy.
'Empathy has been proposed as the motivation behind the sort of 'pro-social' rescue behavior in which one individual tries to free another,' said Professor Alex Kacelnik of Oxford University's Department of Zoology, lead author of the article, 'however, the reproductive benefits of this kind of behavior are relatively well understood as, in nature, they are helping individuals to which they are likely to be genetically related or whose survival is otherwise beneficial to the actor.
'To prove empathy any experiment must show an individual understands another's feelings and is driven by the psychological goal of improving another's wellbeing. Our view is that, so far, there is no proof of this outside of humans.'
The team highlights how interpretations of pro-social behavior vary -- rat rescues, for instance, are regarded as being motivated by empathy whilst ant rescues are not -- even though the observed behavior (pulling on the legs or tail of the trapped individual, followed by biting at the restraint) are very similar.
In order to prove empathy any experiment would need to show that individuals changed their response if the circumstances changed; for instance moving away from a trapped individual if that reduced the trapped animal's distress. It would also need to disentangle empathy from acting simply to stop the trapped animal's stress signals -- something that can be psychologically selfish and does not need to involve empathy.
Solving the riddle of empathy would have important implications not just for the sciences but for philosophy and ethics. However, the team concludes scientists will have to come up with new, more rigorous studies to show that empathy exists outside of humans.

UCC Termination Statements, a Trap for the Unwary: Part Six
Picking up where we left off last week, let?s examine a few more scenarios where a filed UCC termination is not authorized.
A security interest in collateral evidenced by a UCC financing statement may not only secure a loan being paid off, but it may also secure other loans or obligations owed by the debtor or a third party, so that a clear written commitment issued to the new lender by the existing lender being paid off to terminate all of the existing lender?s UCC financing statements against a particular debtor upon payment in full of the specified debt is essential and should be included in the payoff letter.
Another trap for the unwary lender is when there is more than one secured party of record listed on a UCC financing statement, as described above. Code Section 9-510(b) provides clearly that ?[a] record authorized by one secured party of record does not affect the financing statement with regard to another secured party of record.? Thus, there have been instances where less than all of the secured parties of record have terminated the UCC financing statements, resulting in an effective filing remaining of record with respect to those secured parties who did not terminate. See Official Comment 3 to Code Section 9-510.
And finally, consider a situation where a debtor has improperly terminated the UCC statement. There have been unscrupulous debtors who have improperly terminated UCC statements filed against them even though the secured debt remained unpaid.

Olympics 2012: Can German athletes learn something from all that US flag-waving?
Even though Americans may get a little carried away at the Olympics, Germans could express a bit more public patriotism. Think Robert Harting, who just won gold in the discus.
The day after Gabby Douglas won the gold medal in the individual all-around gymnastics competition Fox News debated the question whether the 2012 Olympics US athletes were patriotic enough. David Webb, syndicated radio show host and spokesperson for the National Tea Party Federation complained about the lack of publicly expressed patriotism.

I don't think America has anything to worry about. Every day at the Olympics, athletes, viewers, and journalists show plenty of patriotism. Maybe Mr. Webb missed the endless athletes marveling about their country in post-win interviews, Ryan Lochte wearing a stars-and-stripes grill during his medal ceremony, or Serena Williams dancing on the court at Wimbledon.
Complex emotions
Not being an American, waving the flag at basically everything still bewilders me. And it stands in sharp contrast to my home country of Germany, where for historical reasons waving the flag still can engender deeply complex emotions.
The 2006 World Cup, hosted by Germany, changed attitudes in the country about the merits of waving the flag, something that had been considered shameful since the end of World War II. Amid the fervor of the World Cup, people started hanging flags outside their apartment windows or displaying them in their cars to show support for the German team. Lots of discussion followed about whether this was appropriate.
By the time the European Football Championship rolled around, hosted this year in Poland and Ukraine, it was no longer a big deal waving flags for the German team. Nonetheless, German athletes are still hesitant to refer to national pride and ?bringing home gold to Germany.?
More patriotism
Which is why Thomas Bach, president of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, called for more German patriotism in an interview ahead of London 2012, stating that athletes should not be ashamed of their successes. Polls back him up, showing that German society might be ready for a little more publicly displayed national pride. In a poll conducted in November 2011 by a monthly Protestant magazine, almost half of respondents, young adults between 14 and 29, said they identify as German, not European or as a global citizen.
A halfway approach may be called for. I wouldn't advocate that a German wear a black, red, and gold grill during the medal ceremony. But athletes shouldn't be ashamed of being a proud part of their nation?s Olympic team and saying so publicly. If that is expressed by female athletes wearing "patriotic" nail designs, in the end, they're just having some fashion fun rather than making a heavy political statement. Or just watch discus champion Robert Harting, who tore off his shirt in celebration of "bringing home the gold" for Germany today.

One of the good things about acquiring the formal education toward becoming a certified nursing assistant is the abundance of establishments offering said programs. You can choose from:
• Technical-vocational colleges
• Universities and colleges with a medical education unit
• Community colleges in your area
• Red Cross organizations in the United States
• Accredited online sites
Finding schools and websites that offer CNA training classes is easy - just take a look around your neighborhood, ask local education authorities, and browse the Internet. The hard part comes in choosing the best schools for your needs and wants (i.e., budget, distance and curriculum) as well as in choosing the accredited establishment. The accreditation aspect should be your first priority since you cannot take the CNA certification exam if and when you acquired your training from a non-accredited school or website.
Length of Classes
Depending on the program, you can expect to spend anywhere from 6 weeks to 12 weeks in classroom instruction for a certain number of hours. For example, the Red Cross program consists of 171 hours of classroom instruction and clinical work while other schools and sites trim the hours down to just 75 hours and 16 hours, respectively.
Lessons Learned
The classroom instruction and clinical work are all designed to equip the students with the right professional skills and personal qualities essential in excellent patient care. It should be noted that certified nursing assistants are the front-liners of the healthcare establishment that patients come in most contact with.
The lessons during classroom instruction and clinical work include:
• Basic knowledge and skills on patient care including personal hygiene, transfer from bed to wheelchair, and toileting.
• Primary health issues affecting elderly patients and individuals with disabilities, among other types of patients.
• Basic prevention and control of infections in healthcare settings like hospitals and nursing homes.
• Documentation of certain procedures like taking vital signs and formal protocol in healthcare settings.
• Emergency responses like CPR and basic life support techniques.
These classes are challenging but rewarding in so many ways but you have to participate first to understand.
