Olympics organisers were urgently investigating why several venues had swathes of empty seats on Saturday, the first full day of competition at the London Games.

There were entirely empty blocks at Wembley Arena for the badminton and plenty of unoccupied seats at Greenwich Park for the equestrian events, and at Earls Court for the volleyball.

Britain's Olympics minister Jeremy Hunt called the situation a "shame" and "very disappointing".

One angry punter at the Olympic Park told BBC television he blamed corporate ticketholders.

"It's not fair. There's thousands of people who would have got into that swimming pool to watch the races this morning and couldn't get in.

"They've (now) panicked about the political situation of the stadium being empty. We couldn't even get in but people were coming out saying how the stadium was half-empty.

"There were thousands of people stood outside wishing to go in."

During the Wimbledon championships, a match between British hopeful Anne Keothavong and former world number one Caroline Wozniacki on the 15,000-seater Centre Court would normally be played before a packed house.

But Centre Court was half-empty for the match on Saturday.

"Very surprised at amount of empty seats on Wimbledon Centre Court, especially as I applied for some! It can't be more than 50 percent full," wrote frustrated fan Alex Dover on Twitter.

"We're looking at this very urgently," Olympics minister Hunt told the BBC. "We want to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen."

If sponsors are not going to turn up and take their seats, "we want those tickets to be available for members of the public," he said.

"It's a shame this happened but we're going to do everything to make sure that we fill up those stadia."

Infants are able to detect how speech communicates unobservable intentions, researchers at New York University and McGill University have found in a study that sheds new light on how early in life we can rely on language to acquire knowledge about matters that go beyond first-hand experiences.

Their findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

"Much of what we know about the world does not come from our own experiences, so we have to obtain this information indirectly?from books, the news media, and conversation," explained Athena Vouloumanos, an assistant professor at NYU and one of the study's co-authors. "Our results show infants can acquire knowledge in much the same way?through language, or, specifically, spoken descriptions of phenomena they haven't ? or that can't be ? directly observed."

The study's other co-authors were Kristine Onishi, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Canada's McGill University, and Amanda Pogue, a former research assistant at NYU who is now a graduate student at the University of Waterloo.

Previous scholarship has established that infants seem to understand that speech can be used to categorize and communicate about observable entities such as objects and people. But no study has directly examined whether infants recognize that speech can communicate about unobservable aspects.

In the PNAS study, the researchers sought to determine if one-year-old infants could recognize that speech can communicate about one unobservable phenomenon that is crucial for understanding social interactions: a person's intentions.

To explore this question, the researchers had adults act out short scenarios for the infants. Some scenes ended predictably (that is, with an ending that is congruent with our understanding of the world) while others ended unpredictably (that is, incongruently).

The researchers employed a commonly used method to measure infants' detection of incongruent scenes: looking longer at an incongruent scene.

Infants saw an adult actor (the communicator) attempt, but fail, to stack a ring on a funnel because the funnel was just out of reach. Previous research showed that infants would interpret the actor's failed behavior as signaling the actor's underlying intention to stack the ring. The experimenters then introduced a second actor (the recipient) who was able to reach all the objects. In the key test scene, the communicator turned to the recipient and uttered either a novel word unknown to infants ("koba") or coughed.

Although infants always knew the communicator's intention (through observing her prior failed stacking attempts), the recipient only sometimes had the requisite information to accomplish the communicator's intended action?specifically, when the communicator vocalized appropriately using speech, but not when she coughed.

If infants understood that speech?but not non-speech?could transfer information about an intention, when the communicator used speech and the recipient responded by stacking the ring on the funnel, infants should treat this as a congruent outcome. Results confirmed this prediction. The infants looked longer when the recipient performed a different action, such as imitating the communicators' prior failed movements or stacking the ring somewhere other than on the funnel, suggesting they treated these as incongruent, or surprising, outcomes.

Because coughing doesn't communicate intentions, infants looked equally no matter what the recipient's response was.

"As adults, when we hear people speaking, we have the intuition that they're providing information to one another, even when we don't understand the language being spoken. And it's the same for infants," Onishi said. "Even when they don't understand the meaning of the specific words they hear, they realize that words?like our nonsense word 'koba'?can provide information in a way that coughing cannot."

"What's significant about this is it tells us that infants have access to another channel of communication that we previously didn't know they had," added Vouloumanos. "Understanding that speech can communicate about things that are unobservable gives infants a way to learn about the world beyond what they've experienced. Infants can use this tool to gain insight into other people, helping them develop into capable social beings."

For instance, Gibson?s work describes power relationships in which sex is used as a form of control, or to obtain a ?reward? (higher standing in the prison hierarchy). In other words, prisoners ?redefine their outward identities in an attempt to fit into the prison society without becoming victims themselves? (Gibson 19). To what extent this is true may vary across institutions, gender, and time, which reflected by Kunzel?s writings, allowing for a more historical view from which the articles by Gibson, Ward and Kassebaum may function.

Moving Forward:

The arguments raised by this paper reflect a much more generalized question, which is: to what extent do social circumstances shape one?s sexuality? And, how does this vary across male and female correctional facilities?

Call Center Metrics and Customer Service: Two Common Flaws ...

CSat, AHT, ASA, DCs, ER, NPS, FCR, FTR, TT and TTR*. We could build a new a language with all the metrics that we have for measuring customer service performance! My colleagues at Impact Learning have addressed the why and how of customer service metrics in earlier blog posts. While measuring customer service is necessary and good, customer service managers would benefit themselves and their customers if they reviewed their metrics against two common flaws.

FLAW #1: PRODUCTIVITY TRUMPS QUALITY

An over-reliance on productivity (efficiency) measures, and an underweighting of quality (effectiveness) measures will drive your performance in the wrong direction. It is important to track how many tickets are handled; how many cases are closed ? valid quantitative measures. However? revenue growth and customer retention are triggered by customer satisfaction ? a quality measure. As a rule, most productivity measures are internally focused, helping your organization to manage expenses. And most quality measures are externally focused, to build customer loyalty and revenue growth. Both types of measures are important.

One story relates how a retail bank network invested heavily in product training, expecting their bank tellers to cross-sell additional services. For example, a customer withdrawing a large savings to purchase a car may be offered a car loan. A new parent may want to look at a college fund or investment programs. However, this bank?s main customer service metric was transactions per hour (a productivity measure) and this goal was amplified with monthly teller bonuses. It would obviously take time with customers to explain the additional products. In spite of a considerable investment in product training, the program failed. The root cause was not in the training; the flaw was in the metrics.

FLAW #2: MEASURING THE WRONG BEHAVIOR

What gets measured, gets done. Of course, we?re not the first to cite this. What can happen is that we measure OLD behaviors, or worse, the WRONG behaviors. We put posters up about the importance of customer service, we launch internal marketing campaigns, we set ?customer service? as a corporate value, and we even have customer satisfaction contests and customer service training. However, all can be a waste of time and effort if we continue to measure and recognize the wrong behavior.

Another more recent story is from a computer company that implemented a multi-million dollar knowledge base system in their technical support division. The rationale was that with a searchable database of technical articles, customers could access this information and not call customer service. Moving some of the cases to a self-help solution had tremendous potential savings. For this to work, the assumption was that the agents would gladly populate this new knowledge base that could be accessed by the customer. However, the main metric remained case productivity ? number of cases closed per agent. The new behavior (writing articles) would actually be punished with lower case productivity scores. The metrics were not adjusted to support the desired behavior.

As a trainer and consultant with Impact Learning Systems, we do use metrics to track our performance. Fortunately, we underweight on productivity (number of classes conducted) and overweigh on quality (satisfaction ratings from our clients). LONDON (AP) ? With the flame comes the games.

After years of preparation and months of buildup, London's Olympic moment finally arrived Friday night.

Royal Marine Martyn Williams carried the Olympic torch as he rappelled down from a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter into the Tower of London on the shore of the River Thames. The commando's grand entrance plunged the symbol of the games into the city's historic heart, bringing Olympic pageantry to the British capital that last held the event in 1948.

Crowds lined the city's famed river banks to see the torch arrive, while Yeoman warders ? the ceremonial Tower guards popularly known as Beefeaters ? looked on from inside the landmark's grounds.

For Londoners, the arrival of the torch ignites a time of excitement ? as well as four weeks of extreme crowds and transport strains.

Organizers have tried to smooth the way. London Underground subway lines are festooned with large magenta and pink signs pointing routes to the Olympic venues. Cartoony ads with wide-eyed horses and beefy musclemen warn commuters to remember that Olympic competitions are taking place and to rethink their daily journeys. Barriers are being erected to mark the special traffic lanes for Olympic vehicles ? disparagingly dubbed "Zil lanes," after the limousines granted exclusive use of special lanes on Soviet-era highways.

Londoners who already struggle to get to work on any given weekday aren't convinced all will be well ? and haven't been shy about saying so. The atmosphere of gloom has been segmented by the never-ending rain and a constant stream of headlines about the failure of security contractor G4S to provide enough guards.

The mayor has a message for the naysayers: "Put a sock in it."

Speaking at a ceremony at the Tower of London, Boris Johnson said the arrival of the torch would "dispel any last remaining clouds of dampness and anxiety."

"It will spread the crackling bushfire of Olympic enthusiasm throughout this city and the country," he said, as Kelly Holmes, a British double gold medal winner in 2004, toured the ramparts of the landmark, with the torch held aloft.

Ready or not, the games are a reality. Olympic banners in hot pink, acid yellow and lime green have painted London in neon. The tubby Cyclops-like mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville, are dancing around central London tourist attractions in a desperate bid to be huggable. The city's famous red double-decker buses are sporting ads flogging the last of the unsold Olympic soccer tickets.

The stadiums themselves are nearly ready. At the athletes village, Cuba and Denmark have been the first to drape flags off their balconies. The Olympic clock ticking down the days in Trafalgar Square has reached single digits.

Olympic historian David Goldblatt, co-author of "How to Watch the Olympics," said the flame's arrival in London marks a key turning point.

"I think it signifies the moment when everyone, whether for, against or indifferent, is thinking 'Oh Lord let's just get the bloody thing started,' " he said.

It was only weeks ago that celebrations marking Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee sent Britons into a spasm of patriotic flag waving and "God save the Queen" singing as they watched a flotilla of 1,000 boats on the River Thames. Will the flame's arrival inspire the famously inhibited British to do it all again ? to cheer and wave and weep and be inspired ? as the torch relay winds through the city's 33 boroughs?

Could be ? if the first 62 days of the torch's travels are any indication.

The 8,000-mile (12,900 kilometer) torch relay has already been a cultural happening across the length of Britain, drawing crowds out to meet it wherever it goes. Spectators in rain ponchos have flash-mobbed to its side, hoping for that once-in-a-lifetime chance to touch a bit of history. Some have even stood by the side of the road to see the trucks that carry the torch between cities, as it fulfills a promise to travel within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of 95 percent of Britain's population.

"Both the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics are like carnivals or tribal festivals," Kate Fox, the author of "Watching the English," wrote in a British Airways survey on the games. "We behave in ways we wouldn't normally behave ? dancing in the streets and waving flags and shouting and cheering and indulging in other wildly disinhibited acts, such as maybe even talking to strangers."

Britons were even more committed to the flame before the last London Olympics in 1948, when the torch was actually run in a relay from the site of ancient Olympia in Greece. Janie Hampton, author of "London Olympics: 1908 and 1948," said runners traveled continuously day and night. Crowds emerged to see the 1948 flame even in the middle of the night.

In Britain it was such a draw that police outriders had to push people back as the flame neared the stadium to light the cauldron, Hampton said.

"There is one event in the Games which has captured the imagination ? the carrying of the lighted torch from distant Olympia to the Stadium at Wembley," The Times newspaper wrote on July 28, 1948. "The torch itself, quite apart from its symbolism, is something which, like a lance or a banner, a coat of mail or a jerkin of Lincoln green we can love purely for its own sake. It has a somber glory."

This time the flame has been to every corner of the United Kingdom ahead of its showcase moment at the Olympics' July 27 opening ceremony. Friday was Day 63 of its 70-day journey, which has included travel on boats, planes, horses and hot air balloons. It's been carried by Olympians and Paralympians. The queen's granddaughter, Olympic equestrian competitor Zara Phillips, has shared the honor with 84-year-old Moira Starkey, who walks with two canes and was honored for completing a marathon last year by walking around her town hall 1,876 times to raise money for charity.

If the Beijing relay set up the 2008 Summer Games as China's coming-out party on an international stage, London's relay has set up Britain as the community Olympics ? not flashy or dashy, not big or spectacular, but warm and well attended.

Organizers had always assumed the world would be excited about the games but were not sure what people in Britain would think ? particularly given that taxpayers will be paying 9.3 billion pounds ($14.7 billion) to host the event at a time of economic austerity.

There's also the fact that so much activity is focused on Olympic Park in London. There had to be some sense that other parts of the country were involved ? that the Olympics also belonged to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

But the numbers ? some 9 million people have viewed the torch so far ? speak for themselves. Britain has also poured more money into crowd-control plans for London during the Olympics after acknowledging that it underestimated the crowds that would turn out to see the flame.

Whether they are coming just because it is a local happening, or because people are moved by the fairy dust of the games, it's hard to say. A torch leg features sponsor buses blaring music, streamers and tambourines, cameras and media, cheerleaders shout "Go torchbearer!"

It's not really clear how the capital will respond to the hoopla. This is a place where major events happen with some frequency.

But one thing is for sure. Flame(equals)Olympics.
