It may come as a surprise to learn that Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More was the best-selling rock record in the U.S. last year ... an impressive accomplishment considering it was released here in 2010 (and even earlier in the U.K.).

So obviously, the follow-up to Sigh No More has become a pretty big deal. But rather than shy away from expectations, the guys in Mumford are drawing on all that momentum to put the finishing touches on their new album, as they told MTV News on the red carpet of Sunday's 54th Grammy Awards.

"It's pretty strange. [It's] completely exceeded our expectations," Mumford's Ben Lovett said. "Actually, [we were] talking to our manager about it last night ... we had a dream to do a couple of tours off the back of [Sigh No More] in the U.K., then get back in and do a second record, and that was it. It's been crazy. [Some of the songs on the album are] four, five years old? We recorded it almost three years ago. And what's exciting is that we're right in the midst of recording the new album, so we feel very keen to plow on."

And plowing on they are. While the new album isn't exactly finished, Mumford are finally entering the home stretch of a project that actually began last year. And although you've probably heard a new song or two during the band's U.S. tours, there's a pretty good chance you'll still be surprised by the new album because a lot of that new stuff may or may not make the cut.

"We are in the final stages, we're not finished, we don't quite know the exact track listing," Lovett explained. "But we have kind of road-tested some songs, and we have picked up some new songs and dropped some ones that people might have thought we were going to be putting on the record. We just want to make a record that's cohesive and one that we feel represents us best right now."

Mostly, though, Mumford & Sons admit they're taking their time on the follow-up to Sigh, and you can't really blame them. After all, given the success of that debut disc, they're really in no rush.

"We can't tell you. There just isn't [a release date yet]," Lovett laughed. "We can't even say that any particular song is definitely on the record, because we just don't know. But we're being urgent with it, we're trying very hard."
