Harrisburg Mayor Eliminates Health Benefits For 2 New Employees

Harrisburg City Council and the mayor are at odds over a new issue just days into 2012.

Moments after Sandra Reid was sworn in and council elected new officers on Tuesday, Mayor Linda Thompson signed an executive order eliminating health care for the new council member along with the new city treasurer.

Thompson said she must find ways to trim costs.

"I'm looking at making sure the city is financially stable and one way we do it is get rid of budget absorbers and legacy costs that you can no longer afford to do," Thompson said.

City council members said it?s retaliation after they eliminated her communications director and ombudsman to save $140,000.

They plan to look for ways to restore health benefits to the new employees.
