Somerset Union Museum Installs New Fence

SOMERSET NY ? The Somerset Union Methodist Episcopal Church is slowly being renovated and converted in to a museum.? The museum has just completed the installation of a six foot black metal fence around the church property.? The fence will be used to define a parking area on the south side of the building and control traffic.? However, the fence is not complete.? An eighteenth century, three foot high fence is to be removed from a donor?s property and installed with two gates across the front to the building. ?Watch for it.?? People driving by 8501 Lake Road have remarked that they think ?all the new changes add to the overall appeal of the neighborhood.? ?

The church was originally surrounded by a series of nineteen sheds used to protect the parishioner?s horse and carriages while they were attending services.? The sheds were built during the summer of 1884 and each shed was paid for by the parishioner who used it.?? They were situated on a third of an acre to the north of the church building.? The sheds are visible in a 1917 photograph of the church even though, by this time, most parishioners were driving automobiles.
