Ankylosing spondylitis is a rheumatic disease that mostly affects joints in the spine and the sacroilium in the pelvis. It can also affect other joints such as the hips, knees, shoulders and even the feet. Sometimes, this disease can start by affecting the peripheral joints before proceeding to the spine. This has sometimes led to rheumatologists to misdiagnose a patient with another rheumatic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis which does not normally affect the spine.

This condition usually affects people who are between 18 and 30 years. Signs and symptoms include chronic pain and stiffness in the lower part of the spine or sometimes the entire spine. You may also experience pain in one or the other buttock as well as the back of a thigh from the sacroiliac joint. Often the first symptom of ankylosing spondylitis in women is normally pain in the peripheral joints. It can also affect young children as well as teenagers.

Although more men than women are affected by this disease, women normally manifest early symptoms. This condition normally leads to inflammation of the eye in about 40 percent of the cases. It can also lead to fatigue and even nausea sometimes. Rarely, it can lead to aortitis, apical lung fibrosis and ectasia of the sacral nerve root sheaths.

X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging are used during the diagnosis of this disease. This condition can be treated using medications and physical therapy. Medications normally precede physiotherapy and physical exercises. This is because medications usually help to reduce the inflammation and the pain that is associated with ankylosing spondylitis.
