Mitt Romney Must Separate Himself in CNN Debate (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The Republican presidential debate in New Hampshire tonight, moderated by CNN, will set the tone for the summer Republican campaign season and is Mitt Romney's first chance to separate himself from the pack of candidates. Romney is the leader heading into the debate and he will face off against six fellow candidates with the goal of knocking him down a peg in front of a national audience.

Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum will be the six candidates looking to measure themselves against the leading candidate Romney. The debate field is larger than the Fox News debate in South Carolina and will give our first glimpse of Romney under pressure in the presidential race for 2012.

The debate will give fringe candidates Cain and Paul a national spotlight with differing results. Cain was the unofficial winner of the South Carolina debate, moderated by Fox News in May. Romney did not take part in the South Carolina debate but Cain, former CEO of Godfather's Pizza, stole the show against a less talented gathering of candidates.

Paul is never much of a threat in the debate forum despite his unusual stances on many subjects. Paul's strong economic policies contrast greatly with his views to legalize all drugs including heroin. Paul is always a welcome change of pace to the stodgy Republican debates but his effectiveness is not best in this forum.

Romney expects attacks in this debate from all sides. Bachmann will lead the attack on Romney and his health care plan while governor of Massachusetts. Bachmann is not the only candidate who will attempt to chip away at Romney's lead. Expect Santorum to also be on the attack against Romney as well.

Romney is under the gun with the Republican establishment heading into this debate and if he falters they will take the opportunity to discredit him. It will be interesting to see how many times the Republican candidates violate Ronald Reagan's 11 commandment, "Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican."
