Fall 2011 Tools for Schools Drive
Once again, Norman Hall will be the central drop off location for the Fall Tools for Schools Back to School Drive for all colleges and departments at University of Florida. The Terrace Room has been reserved for the following dates and times for this purpose: Friday, July 29th, 10:00am-12noon and Wednesday, August 10th 2:00-4:00pm. Attached, please find examples of items that can be of use in the program. These include normal classroom supplies, as well as arts and crafts, office, and teacher supplies. We hope you will participate in this worthy and professionally affiliated cause. Please scan your homes and offices for these supplies as you prepare for the upcoming academic year, and consider making a donation to our local school district?s teachers/educators.


Fall 2011 Course Announcements

Academic Writing; EDG 6931, Meets 12:50-3:50pm (W) 2329 Norman Hall; Instructor: Dr. Zhihui Fang
This seminar is designed to enhance the capacity of doctoral students from all academic areas to write for academic and professional purposes. It guides students through the whole process of academic writing that includes understanding the task at hand, planning the work, conducting library research, reading to gather information, developing audience awareness, appropriating discursive resources, and using feedback and editing to improve writing. The course focuses on exploring the ways in which language is used to present information, structure text, develop argument, embed perspectives, reference sources, and address audience needs in academic writing. It combines focused discussion of key features and issues of academic writing with practical applications throughcritical analysis of model essays as well as careful critique of students? own writing. The course also provides an insider?s perspective on writing for scholarly publications, including journal/publisher selection, manuscript review process, overcoming rejections, and tips for getting published.

Race and Education; EDG4930, Section 3111; Fall 2011 Thursdays 2nd -4th periods; Instructor: Diedre F. Houchen
This undergraduate level education course examines the history of race in America and its implications for human potential, social status, and educational attainment. We will pay particular attention to critical junctures in the development of public education and analyze implications of education policy for racialized groups in the United States. Topics to be discussed include the construction of Whiteness, the assimilation of Irish people within the White race, and the experiences of Native Americans, African Americans, and Latino cultures within public education. Cognitive Psychology Applied to Education; EDP 6052, Section 053A; Meets Tuesdays 4:05pm-7:05pm; Instructor: Dr. David Therriault
The course explores mental processes and constructs (e.g., attention, memory, language, reading, complex problem solving) as they related to educational practices (e.g., instructional techniques, learning). We will examine readings primarily from a psychological point of view that makes use of experimental methodologies. See the attached flyer for more information.

Financing of Higher Education; EDH 7505, Section 06AB; Fall 2011; Thursday, periods 10-E1
Course Description: Junior college through university. Theoretical basis for use of tax funds for education, student fees and tuition, state methods for financing, planning, cost benefit, budgeting, federal role, and capital outlay.

Opportunities

Graduate Assistantship Available
The College of Education Faculty Policy Councilis accepting applications for a graduate assistant for a .125 assistantship (approximately 5 hours per week) for Fall and Spring semesters. This assistantship is available only to doctoral students who already hold a .25 FTE or greater graduate assistantship during Fall 2011 in the College of Education.The duties of this add-on assistantship include: Taking minutes at FPC and Curriculum committee meetings, posting information to the FPC website, minor other duties as assigned. Send a letter of application and a resume or cv to Dorene Ross dross@coe.ufl.edu. Applications will be reviewed beginning August 15th.

Volunteers needed for summer camp
Eastside Advocacy Group For Youth is in need of volunteers for its Summer Camp located in Boulware Springs Park. Grades being served:Kdg. thru 9th Grades in Reading, Writing, Comprehension, and Math. Part-time Employment Opportunity
Christ Community Church is looking for 2 students to fill Sunday morning position. Duties: Arrive 15 minutes before services begin to help children transition into rooms. Change all diapers, help children through transitions (i.e. wash hands after playing outside, or setting up for snack). Clean up rooms after services are over. Required: Background check is provided, 1?st Aid certified provided, works well with infants and toddlers. Can lift infants and toddlers. Is majoring in elementary education, child development, special education, family studies. Pays $8 per hour. Works an average of 2-3 Sundays per month. Looking for babysitting services for our 20 month old boy.? Main duty will be to play with and care for child (feed, help with nap).? Times needed are average 12 hours per week starting August 1, 2011.? Candidate must be good with children, physically capable keeping up with a toddler, and have prior experience caring for toddlers.? One?s own transportation is needed.?
